There were a few years, where I kind of plateaued, or even backslid a bit. But over the past few months I've been actively practicing again, applying some new techniques, singing a lot, and just exploring. It has given me more confidence and optimism.

I've also been finding a lot of new music lately. One of the bands I like is Electric Callboy... most of their music is tongue in cheek, self parodying in one way or another. It makes me laugh, but also... most of it is pretty catchy.

My favorite of theirs is Tekkno Express:

I mention it mostly because yesterday I recorded a fun clip of me imitating the train announcer, whose voice I really like and isn't terribly far from mine:

(I added the reverb with Audacity.)

Not Afraid

Well... I own 3 of Eminem CD's (the most of any artist in my collection), plus the 8 Mile DVD, and have considered myself a fan of his for over 10 years (ever since the Slim Shady LP came out in 1999, which blew me away). But I have to say, Marshall Mathers still has a unique ability to surpise and inspire me:

Admittedly there's something that feels a little bit too polished or commercial about this song, almost as if it's a Nike or Pepsi commercial. And I don't think it measures up lyrically to some of his other great works. But especially towards the end, I find it is pretty hard not to react emotionally to it. Twice in a row I broke into tears watching it, even while trying not to and thinking "ok, this time it's not going to get me". I think I'll wait till tomorrow to give it another try. Seems to fit so many themes in my life. Perhaps it's the same reason I liked the Matrix so much... clearly there are some strong references to Neo in it.

Another good video released recently, of course, is Gaga's Alejandro, although I will resist the temptation to link to that as I've linked to enough of her art lately and those of you who are fans have probably already seen it, and those of you who aren't... probably don't care. Also, while massively cool, I don't think it measures up to the Telephone video.

Pendulum

I have been listening to this group all week, and wow.. they are damn good.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ankh_f_n_khonsu for posting two of their videos in his journal.

I agree that these two do seem to be their coolest videos:

Slam:

The Other Side:

both are extremely catchy tunes that have been getting stuck in my head a lot. But Pendulum seems to also have an aweful lot of other great stuff too:

Blood Sugar:

Voodoo People, Pendulum remix (I don't think it quite lives up to the original(*), but the video is teh awesome):

I've always enjoyed drum and bass, but never heard stuff quite this good before. It's always seemed like one of those genres that is really neat but there is so much copying from one group to the next that it all ends up sounding kind of similar. Not the case for Pendulum, although I'm sure they are already being copied like mad.

(*) Prodigy you'll notice is listed in my profile as one of my 13 very exclusive very select "favorite bands" of all time. Voodoo People I fondly remember as my very first exposure to them... I came home from seeing Hackers in the theater in 1995 and went out and bought the soundtrack all excited about how good the music in it had been. To my dismay, upon getting home and throwing it in the CD player I realized that the entire CD was pretty much complete crap except for Voodoo People and one other song (Underworld's Cowgirl). I think Voodoo People had stuck in my head so much after watching it, I had forgotten the whole rest of the movie.

Justice

I stumbled on to Justice from hearing a track on the July Burning Circle. They've got a lot of totally rad, really tight, bomb diggity shiznat. I really love these guys. They are from France, and won best video at the European MTV music awards in 2006, and then for a different video in 2007. Nominated for a grammy as well as lots of MTV music awards in 2008. My apologies if everyone else has already heard of them. If not, check it out...

First, start by listening to Justice's song Genesis (with video from Michael Jackson's Thriller)... I really wanted to embed this one, but it's disabled. Probably my favorite overall, but it's hard to compare because so much of their stuff is so different, but all very good:

Another video of Waters of Nazareth someone made, with dancing poker chips... cool video, but unfortunately the sound quality really sucks... they must have turned it up too high or something:

Justice - New Jack (to a Michael Jackson montage--not sure what the connection is between Justice and Michael Jackson videos, but they both do seem to go well together):

Justice - DVNO, humorous song/video about 4 letters in gold:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4QJBODw7_0

Justice - Stress, this video is crazy intense/disturbing, but done very well and highly appropriate for the song:

Justice - D.A.N.C.E., winner of the 2007 European MTV award for best video; nominated for 2008 MTV award for best video as well as video of the year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ6jjfSL-wQ

Justice - D.A.N.C.E., live on Jimmy Kimmel (each band member dressed up like a different famous musician from history; UPDATE/correction: the actual "band members" are just the 2 guys who turn on the radio, and the rest are impersonators):

My only complaint is that, Bad Religion has a much cooler symbol for their band than Justice does (compare: Bad Religion, Justice)

I've been in a really good mood this week; everything's been going awesome. I just wish I had more time to write.
