Ok, starting with the fun...

Met [livejournal.com profile] easwaran in person for the first time last weekend. I don't think I've enjoyed meeting an lj person that much since [livejournal.com profile] pbrane, many years ago. Unfortunately, it's unlikely we'll cross paths too often in the future... but possible.

Went to Tortuga party this weekend, saw lots of people I hadn't seen in a while. Got a tour of the recently remodeled rooms and the "secret passageway". Stayed overnight and had brunch in the morning, with a huge group of people from the party last night.

Can't remember if I mentioned this already, but I also went to [livejournal.com profile] nasu_dengaku's return "chaos" party, two weekends ago.

Somewhat frustrating...

Have started commuting back and forth to Santa Cruz. Travel takes up a good bit of time, but so far it has not been too bad.

Very frustrating...

No internet for this week, which happens to coincide with my bike tire getting a slow leak in it. It took about 24 hours to drain out, so I used it for a few days while just making sure to pump it up before riding it each time. That could have worked indefinitely, but then I had to go and try to fix it. Bought a patch, took it apart and found the leak, put it on, put everything back together, then it all looked good and fixed, only to go flat an hour later. So now by "fixing" it I have managed to introduce a new, faster leak, that makes the bike completly unusable. To top it off, all of the places that I could find in the area that might sell new tubes on Saturday were closed for the weekend. To add to that, BART is going on strike starting tomorrow (Monday). I intend to replace the tube first thing in the morning, if the bike shop is open.... only problem, it is at a BART station, so it may be closed for the strike.

Also fun...

Despite our many ideological differences, and my general disbelief in the subject, [livejournal.com profile] ankh_f_n_khonsu has kindly offered me a gift of his time and effort, my natal astrology chart, complete with his interpretation and notes. This is based on the exact date, time, and birthplace I gave him many months ago when he offered to do it. I have not had much of a chance to look at it yet, but I will check it out more carefully at some point. I think the scientific evidence against astrology is clear and unambiguous, but I nevertheless find stuff like this fascinating and touching on a personal level.

Oh, and while I'm posting links, I might as well link to a full copy of my PhD dissertation, which I submitted back in early June. Kudos to the first person who finds the easter egg! (unless you are one of the few people I already mentioned it to.)

My dissertation, in its entirety; if you've ever wondered what you have to do to get a PhD in high energy theoretical physics, well... something like this: Direct Gauge Mediation of Supersymmetry Breaking with a Strongly Coupled Hidden Sector
