I've been saying I'm going to post these for what seems like forever now, but I've finally had a chance. It's all finished, so here is my complete tattoo. Total time took about 6 hours of poking me with needles. It's still healing, but you can't really tell from the pictures:

Believe it or not, the 42nd Mersenne prime is encoded in the nucleotides... currently this is the [edit: 2nd] world's largest prime number. (Update: it appears that in December the 43rd was found... somehow I missed this in my haste to get it finished :( well, no matter what I got it wouldn't have stayed the largest for long... and 42 is a nice one to stick with in that it happens to be the answer to life, the universe, and everything). It's over a million digits long, which would usually make it impossible to encode that information in such a small space. However, Mersenne primes are very special in that they can be represented by 2p-1 where p is a smaller prime. In this case, the exponent p is 25964951. It is sometimes referred to as M25964951. So what about that bit about me not wanting to be labelled a "dork" for the rest of my life? Haha. That was April 1st, people, welcome to real life. If you believed that even for a second, then you must think I'm far more insecure about my geekhood status. If ya can't hide it, then I say flaunt it baby. Represent!

. . . btw, how was the color needle? I've only gotten b&w, and I've heard there's a difference (pain wise).

He had a special tip that was 6-needles-wide. In the beginning, I was surprised to find it hurt slightly less than the single tip (don't know why, could be just that I knew what to expect having gone through it before... or maybe because the pain was less focused on one point?). But the thing that made it end up hurting worse by the end was, he went over the same areas again with different colors--kind of like agitating an already open wound, not fun. Also, the whole thing burned a lot more from the air afterwards, since it was large regions that were open instead of tiny line-cuts. Also is taking longer to heal, I still have a few scabs there that are slowly going away.

Thanks, although coincidentally I happened to shave it off again yesterday morning.

I think I've found the optimal pattern which minimizes the ratio of the time I spend shaving, without ending up looking like Santa Claus. I've settled down into shaving everything clean about once a month, and then letting it grow for the next month. I also get bored looking the same way all the time so the variation helps me psychologically too.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the hair on my head, though. I used to shave it with an 1/8th inch guard every 2 to 3 weeks, but it's been growing out for the past 2 to 3 months now so it's getting pretty thick and wild. I might decide to try going into an actual hair salon this time (been at least 4 years since I've done that)... not sure.

Spectacular

Dr. Jones your brilliance is matched only by your creativity, I am truly impressed. Most tattoo's are so lame, this is very, very cool. Nice!

Thank you, nick! I figured you'd be one who'd truly appreciate it.

If I'm going to have to live with something on my body permanently, I wouldn't settle for anything less :)

Better yet, I've so far enjoyed trying to decode it. I might ask for some help in a week, but how cool is it that your tattoo doubles as a fun puzzle? :)

nice... just send me an email if you need any hints; it'll be interesting to see if it's decodable without my giving any.

It did cross my mind to say something like "whoever tells me which colors stand for what gets a cookie, or a prize of some kind" but I figured nobody would be interested enough to rise to the challenge. And I also couldn't think of anything to offer easily as a prize... if nothing else, you just get "mad props" :)

I had no idea you were so enthralled with logic gates.

The factorization is in the freckles, right?
