Santa Cruz Future Salon, part deux
Jan. 28th, 2006 06:03 pmThe Santa Cruz Futurists strike again, with a new meeting for a new year. This Sunday (Jan 29th) at 5pm in ISB231 (on UCSC campus) we will be discussing Privacy.
This is a large topic, but a particularly current one in light of the recent news that the Pentagon has been spying on UCSC students and officially classifies our student organized protests as a "credible threat" to national security (see message from chancellor or MSNBC article for details if you didn't hear about this). Another current privacy topic we could talk about is the recently announced intentions of the US's military psyops program to "Fight the Net". Of course, most of the discussion should revolve around the privacy concerns and implications of developing and future technologies. But since there has been so much in the news lately about privacy, I don't think anyone will object to spending a bit of time discussing current events.
Other subtopics which have been suggested and will hopefully be addressed at the meeting are: Riya, Facial Recognition, Facebook, Sousveillance, Camera Phones, The Genetic Privacy Act, Cryptome, Freedom of Information Act, The Patriot Act, The Information Awareness Office, The NSA, The Government Demands about Google's Collected Info and Porn.
We're looking for anyone who wants to do a bit of quick research on one or more of these topics and give a 1 to 5 minute briefing on them at the meeting. If not, you're still welcome to come and listen to what others have to say. We have no central speaker this time, aside from the briefings which will be given at the beginning and lead into a moderated group discussion.
